Why is citing sources important?

Citing sources gives credibility to your work by showing others where you found your information. This allows readers to pursue the topic themselves and better understand the context of your work.

MLA 9th Edition

In MLA 9th Edition, works cited entries should consist of the following "Core Elements" in the order below. Each element should be followed by the punctuation mark shown below. If what you are citing does not have one of the elements, just skip it.


  1. Author.
  2. Title of source.
  3. Title of container, 
  4. Contributor,
  5. Version,
  6. Number,
  7. Publisher,
  8. Publication date,
  9. Location.
